How to Play Marble Golf: The Ultimate Custom Indoor Game

A Portable Miniature Golf Experience Built on Imagination

Marble Golf is a portable, marble-based adaptation of golf that brings the spatial strategy of a golf hole—from tee box to green—right onto your living room floor, or anywhere else you can imagine. The beauty of the game lies in its simplicity and its ability to excel indoors. By placing our Go Rings™ around a room, anywhere can become a custom golf hole.

Because the game relies on creative layout design, no two matches are ever the same. You can weave a course around chair legs, under tables, or across different rooms using whatever obstacles are on hand. It is a quiet, highly portable, and strategic pastime that challenges players of all ages to think like course designers, judge distances, and refine their shooting touch.

How to Play

Play with 2 to 4 players

Requires 1 shooter per player and 3 Go Rings™

Setup & Objective

The primary goal of Marble Golf is straightforward: complete the course in the fewest number of strokes (shots) possible. The player with the lowest total score at the end of the final hole wins.

Before the match begins, players work together to build the course layout. You can choose between two setup styles:

  • Shared Tee Box: All players launch their first shot from a single, designated starting spot to complete all three holes.

  • Separate Tee Boxes: Each of the three holes has its own unique starting position, creating a logical progression through the space.

Depending on how much time you have, you can play a quick 3-hole course, loop through the layout twice for a 6-hole course, or three times for a full 9-hole course.

Course Design & Par Rules

The true joy of Marble Golf lies in utilizing your physical environment. Everyday household objects act as perfect hazards. You can use chair legs as trees, books as solid walls, or rug edges as sand traps.

To keep the game balanced, every standard hole starts with a default baseline score of Par 3. This means an open, straight shot to the Go Ring should ideally take three strokes. However, you can increase the difficulty and modify the par based on the terrain:

  • Turns (Dog-legs): If a hole is designed around a corner, wall, or obstacle that blocks a straight-line view of the Go Ring from the tee box, the par increases by 1 (making it a Par 4).

  • Plane Changes: If a hole requires shooting up a ramp, across a physical elevation change (like onto a couch cushion or a low step), or onto a different surface type, the par increases by 1 (making it a Par 4).

If a hole features both a dog-leg turn and a plane change, these modifiers stack, raising that specific hole to a Par 5.

Game Rules & Scoring

Players take turns taking their first stroke from the tee box. For all remaining shots on a hole, the player whose marble rests farthest from the target shoots first. Each individual shot counts as one stroke.

Our Go Rings are specialized, low-profile targets designed with a subtle slope. This allows your shooter marble to roll smoothly up the outer edge and drop cleanly into the center hole on flat surfaces.

To reward accurate play, the game features a specific rule known as The Span.

What is a Span? A "Span" is defined as the maximum distance between the tip of a player's thumb and the end of their outstretched pinky finger.

The Span Rule

If your shooter marble comes to a stop within one Span of the Go Ring, your next stroke is automatically considered "made."

  • Example: If your first shot lands far away, and your second shot rolls to a stop just a few inches from the ring, your next shot is guaranteed. You do not need to take a physical third shot; you safely secure a score of 3 for that hole.

The Final Shot

When your marble rests within one Span, you attempt a your final shot to sink the marble directly into the center of the Go Ring from where it lies.

  • If you make it: The automatic stroke is eliminated. You reduce your final score for that hole by 1 stroke (e.g., turning your guaranteed Par 3 into a Birdie 2).

  • If you miss it: There is no penalty. You simply walk away with the standard score you earned through the Span rule (your score remains a 3).

Hazards & House Rules

Because indoor spaces feature unpredictable layouts, boundaries must be established before play begins.

  • Unplayable Lies: If a marble rolls completely out of bounds or lodges itself in an unreachable area (such as deep beneath a heavy couch), the player receives a 1-stroke penalty. The player must retrieve the marble and place it nearby, no closer to the hole, before taking their next shot.

  • House Rules: Players can mutually agree to play a marble "where it lies" if the marble is physically accessible but difficult to reach (such as directly behind a dining chair leg). In this case, no penalty stroke is applied, forcing the player to use a creative bank shot or a soft touch to get back into play.
